Order picker or reach truck – which one do you need?

Recently, I had a customer ask me what the difference is between an order picker and reach truck. It’s a good question, especially if you unfamiliar with  the different types of forklifts available. In short, the biggest difference between an order picker and a reach truck is this:In an order picker, the operator goes up in the air with a load and manually “picks” an order from a rack. With a reach truck, the operator stays in the cab of the machine at ground level and moves the load up mechanically.

The Order PickerAn order picker is designed to take the forklift operator up to the rack with or without a load. The order picker operator stands on a platform and moves up with the mast, unlike most lift trucks. This piece of equipment can access heights of anywhere between 9 feet and 35 feet. Commonly, the forks hold a load that is being added to, not being put away. They’re designed for applications that require an operator to be at the same level as the inventory to pick a specific order. Picking cases or single items from racks in a warehouse is the only job an order picker forklift does.

The Reach Truck Reach Trucks are forklifts used in narrow aisle applications – almost always in warehouses. They are designed to have two outer legs that help distribute the load, and a single set of wheels in the back. The wheels are located below the operator, which help create a tighter turn radius. A scissor mechanism called a pantograph allows the forks and load to extend forward. This allows it to “reach” into a rack with either a double or a single reach configuration design. Reach trucks can accommodate racks up to 30 feet, typically. A user may want to consider a Reach Truck if their racking system is taller than 15-16 feet. If you are using racks that are 16 feet and less, then you can still use a regular sit down or counterbalanced forklift. Consider a reach truck only if you need that higher lift capability.Below is an example of each type of lift. Both of these are currently available in our inventory for sale or rent. On the left is a 2000 Model Crown RR5020-45. We have fully reconditioned this unit with fresh paint and decals. This particular model has a reach height of 25 feet. You’ll notice the operator will stay at ground level while only the mast will rise up. On the right is a 2004 Raymond EASI OPC30TT order picker. This Raymond has a platform height of 20 feet, giving the operator a working height of anywhere between 25-26 feet (depending on how tall the operator is). If you would like more information on these lifts or have any other forklift related questions – never hesitate to reach out to us! We are your forklift guys (& gals)!
